Vocational Pathway - Manufacturing and Technology Sector (Longveld) (Level 2)
About the programme
Wintec has teamed up with Hamilton-based manufacturer Longveld a leading Engineering and Stainless Steel Manufacturing business in Hamilton, to offer a unique training course for young women interested in a career in fabrication and engineering.
It will see young women at Year 11 and 12 levels from Waikato Trades Academy Partnership schools attend one day a week at our Wintec trades and engineering workshops, where they will build a project gaining knowledge in a variety of skills relating to automotive, electrical, and mechanical engineering. This hands-on practical course provides entry-level skills that can take students to the next level of study or work in manufacturing and technology.

Entry criteria: Year 11 or 12 female students studying at a Waikato Trades Academy Partnership school.

"We are committed to providing work experience for young people in the engineering trades. We want to help them make choices that suit their skills and aptitude. However, women are under-represented in our sector and we are working hard to address this. Gender diversity benefits workplace culture and therefore long term sustainability. We have had up to five female trade staff in our workshop at any one time and currently, 40% of our managers are women, and we want to build on this."

The Waikato Trades Academy
The Waikato Trades Academy is a Government-led initiative, free to students, which sees Wintec partner with 31 Waikato secondary schools to encourage students to stay in school for longer by engaging them in hands-on learning.
