About the programme

Mechanical engineering applies some of the basic principles of engineering, physics, and materials science for the design, analysis, manufacturing and maintenance of mechanical systems. It is the branch of engineering that includes the design, production and operation of machinery; including hand tools and portable power tools, measuring and dimensional measuring devices, engineering marking-out equipment, various steel cutting and welding procedures, assembly, safe work practices and procedures.

This take-home project-based course will introduce you to the exciting world of engineering and will provide you with the ability to look into an engineering apprenticeship, or start a higher level of mechanical engineering qualification at Wintec.

Programme structure: 1 day per week (8.30am-3pm) during the school term.

Duration of programme: 32 weeks

Location: Wintec Rotokauri Campus, 51 Akoranga Road Hamilton

Entry criteria: To enter year two you will need to have completed 80% of the available credits in year one, and 100% of the available credits relating to your chosen year two module. All students must either have, or be enrolled in Level 2 Math or are completing the equivalent unit standard at school to be eligible. ​Candidates who do not meet this may be accepted at the discretion of the WTA.
